Built in 1935, McKeown Manor is one of the City of Tonawanda’s oldest surviving apartment buildings. Its prominent all-brick facade has stood at the corner of William and Fletcher Streets for more than 90 years.
The intersection’s history reaches even further back. 1902 records show a cigar shop operated by Miss Augusta Reppentin at “Fletcher and William,” showing that the corner was already part of Tonawanda’s neighborhood business community decades before the present building was constructed.
Occupying two original city lots, the building reflects an important period in Tonawanda’s development, when the city’s canal, lumber and manufacturing economy supported the growth of established residential neighborhoods.
Today, McKeown Manor begins a new chapter under local ownership. Its thoughtfully renovated apartments combine the building’s enduring historic character including tall ceilings, expansive rooms and distinctive masonry with the comfort and convenience of modern living.
